And I Found Myself Drowning…
I woke up
And I found myself drowning.
The ripples from where I had fallen,
The billowing waves above me.
So, I caught my breath, anchored it to my throat
and
My fear faded–
husked to the silt, and held
By the tide which lilted
me into a solace memory
Where rocks would not grow upon them new moss,
And the morass around it would not dry enough
To let the milkweed see the light of sun–
That is where I was lain.
In the densest of shadows, and under the
Darkest of nighttime skies, I settled into
Comforting memories of
The tall grass which beckoned me forward
The thicket I would hide in as a child,
And the ceiling fan which nearly saw itself to pieces at the speed it could barely maintain
I woke up,
And from window I could hear
The world as it was…
And I found myself drowning.
